The Knysna golf course, situated on the Garden Route in South Africa, was founded in 1909 and is one of the country’s oldest, most characterful, and cherished golf clubs in the region. Before the railway line came to Knysna, the original course was situated in the lower part of town. The old nine holes stretched over the recreation ground on land currently used by the railways and the current school sports grounds.

George Strydom began constructing the original 9-hole course in 1949, with Jock Fraser finishing the job two years later. Twenty years after completing the 9-hole golf course, Harold Thesen designed and implemented the building of the additional 9-holes for the course. In the 1990’s, Phillip Basson reconstructed the greens, built new water hazards and introduced new bunkers to increase the golfing challenge.

In January 2010, a devastating fire broke out and destroyed the entire new Clubhouse building. A replacement clubhouse was built in April 2011. Today one can see some of the memorabilia and trophies that were found during the cleaning after the fire.

The 18-hole golf course features many tidal pools and inlets with magnificent indigenous trees and a wide variety of birdlife. Although flat and easy to walk, the course still provides players of all levels with a good challenge and is a great golfing experience not to be missed while touring the area.

Long par-5s, imposing par-3s and some challenging par-4s, make it an enjoyable but thought-provoking test for players of all levels. The water hazards are in play on 12 of the holes. The signature hole is the Par 3, 8^th with its island green and the 152-meter hole and is usually played with a crosswind over the fairway.

The course boasts some of the most delicate greens in the Southern Cape and its many natural hazards and scenic location add to its charm and visual appeal.
