Once an airfield, today it is a living piece of environmental and golfing heritage. The golf course design was modelled on the links courses of the British Isles, and Gary Player has described it as his greatest ever feat as a golf course designer. The Links is best characterised by its dune-style landscape and undulating terrain and will pose a challenge to even the most esteemed player out there.

The Links golf course is a true championship course, but with enough fairway, and width to offer a challenge most golfers will see as achievable, rather than impossible. US golfing great Jack Nicklaus said of The Links, “This is the best links golf course I have seen outside Scotland”.

For your opening tee shot, aim just a little right of the left-hand bunker for a better approach shot. The green will still be hidden in part due to the undulations of the course. A sneaky bunker to the left is a surprise for most players. The tricky part of this hole is knowing where the pin is located as the green is wide but not very deep.

The 4^th hole is a tranquil par 4. The fairway is wide, and the green has an open front, allowing any golfer to roll onto the green easily.

The shortest par 3 on The Links is the 11^th. The green is surrounded by bunkers and your shot will need to carry the wetland hazard in front of the green. The green itself will be a golfers delight as the movement and the undulations here will make for rewarding putts.

“Roon The Bend” is the 15^th par 4 and is one of the few doglegs on the golf course which played from right to left. There are only three bunkers on this hole but before you celebrate the lack of bunkers, be aware of the wetland hazard from tee to green on the left side, which almost encircles the green around the back and to the left. The approach shot into the green will need to be calculated and is complicated by the undulating fairway.

This course has to be on the avid golfer’s top 10 courses to play in South Africa and should not be missed.
